RENTAL CAR & TRAVEL INSUR. - Page 2

Rental Car insurance (continued)

3.     Personal Effects Coverage (“PEC”) or Personal Effects Protection (“PEP”). This coverage generally costs less than $5 per day  and covers your luggage for any damage. It may also cover for loss or theft.  Deductibles may or may not apply.  If you already have homeowner’s protection, this loss is probably already covered, although you may have a deductible.  Check with your insurance company.

4.     Coverage when you are renting a vehicle out of the country.  When you plan on renting or driving a rental car outside the United States (even if the vehicle was rented within the United States), make sure you check to see what coverage for losses applies.  Often, your own coverage from your auto policy or health policy may have many exceptions for international coverage.  Coverage available from credit cards may also have significant exceptions.  Make sure you check.  And even if you purchase coverage from the rental car company, make sure it will still be good if you drive in another country (even if they allow you to drive the car in another country).  For instance, coverage purchased from a rental company on a car rented in Arizona, may not be in effect if the car is driven in Mexico.  Or coverage purchased on a car rented in Germany may not be any good if the car is driven in Poland.  Make sure you check so you do not have any surprises.

Travel Insurance

Their are many types of travel insurance available to protect against unforeseen events and losses that may occur.  Travel insurance is generally available for both domestic and international travel, and for both personal and business travel.  Travel insurance is generally arranged for a specific trip at the time of booking the trip, but can be purchased on a continuous basis to cover all travel during the coverage time period.  Coverage can be purchased directly from tour operators and cruise lines, as well as travel agents and travel insurance companies.  Travel insurance companies generally offer a wider variety and more comprehensive insurance options.  Pricing and terms can be “all over the place” so be sure to check from various sources before deciding what coverage is right for you and who to purchase the coverage from.  Cost will generally be in the 3%-10% range as a percentage of the trip’s overall cost.

Occurrences that can be insured against include:

1.     Trip cancellation or interruption (including the cost of a delayed departure or delayed baggage).

2.     Medical expenses.

3.     Accidental death (including funeral expenses) and disabilities incurred.

4.     Personal liability and legal assistance.

5.     Loss of property (including theft and damage) including personal possessions and money.

6.     Damage to rental cars.

7.     Travel to high-risk countries.

Some travel insurance policies will also provide certain services when traveling such as emergency travel assistance and concierge services.
